What is Lab for Equity in Autism Dissemination (LEAD)?

For the past 12 years, Sarabeth Broder-Fingert, MD, MPH has been working to develop and test novel interventions to improve the lives of vulnerable children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other developmental disabilities. Autism spectrum disorder research is vital to ensure that all children have equitable access to autism diagnosis, treatment, and services.

Significant racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic disparities exist for children with ASD. This project seeks to successfully implement patient navigation. This is a strategy that helps vulnerable populations surmount psychological and logistical obstacles to obtaining proper care. Therefore reducing health disparities for children with autism spectrum disorder.

Two decades of evidence support the effectiveness of Family Navigation as a care-management approach to reducing disparities in access to health services. 

We created a multicomponent intervention whereby Family Navigation utilizes motivational interviews and problem-solving strategies in conjunction with patient education and care coordination.

By examining which delivery strategy is most effective, which components are most essential, and how the intervention can be shared with a broad population, this project aims to optimize Family Navigation.

Young people who are LGBTQ+ face significant barriers to accessing mental health services. Family Navigation holds promise as an evidence-based intervention to address these barriers.

This project seeks to adapt Family Navigation to ensure its success with LGBTQ+ youth who need access to mental health services.

Mobile health (mHealth) autism screening tools may improve early access to ASD care; however, low-income and minority families face challenges using this technology. 

This project is examining existing mHealth autism screening tools by collecting user data from low-income/minority parents and community providers to help understand barriers to use. In addition, interviews are being conducted with screener tool developers to create guidelines for mHealth Autism screening tools that meet the needs of underserved families and populations.

Autism Spectrum Disorder impacts almost 2 percent of children. The American Academy of Pediatrics believes early universal screening at well-baby checkups are an important step toward better outcomes. However, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recently failed to endorse early universal screening for ASD. 

To objectively resolve this impasse, this project will compare the long-term clinical, educational, and family outcomes of two separate groups of children. One group will comprise children whose ASD was detected between ages 12-24 months via universal screening at well-baby checkups. The other will consist of children with ASD who did not participate in an early detection program. The success of this first-of-its-kind work will spark more studies. The goal is to create pediatric best-practices guidelines for the age of detection and treatment of ASD.

Early intervention for children with ASD can have a dramatic impact on outcomes. The public health system’s capacity to provide such services, however, is challenged by the rapid increase in ASD prevalence. 

The goal of this research is to increase equitable access to ASD-specialized early intervention by capitalizing on the existing infrastructure of the Part C Early Intervention (EI) system. This project will train EI providers to use an intervention that can improve child and family outcomes as well as mitigate the economic costs associated with ASD.

​​Building Capacity for the Next Generation of Diverse Scholars Addressing the Translational Pipeline

Workforce diversity is an urgent priority for the National Institutes of Health (NIH); however, there are few initiatives to diversify the autism research workforce. The problem of workforce diversity in research has far-reaching clinical implications. 

A workforce that represents the community it serves can address cultural beliefs and practices as well as stigmas that may impact autism spectrum disorder diagnosis and treatment and can, ultimately, lead to a better quality of care. The objective of this project is to increase diversity in the autism research workforce by convening a conference focused on career advancement for individuals who are underrepresented in the biomedical research workforce.

Rani Jones is the current Project Coordinator for the Child Health Equity Center. She graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in 2023 with her B.S. in Biochemistry and Biophysics, and a minor in Behavioral and Cognitive Neuroscience. During her time as an undergraduate, she spent a lot of time volunteering with children in the New York capital region. She is very interested in public health and plans to continue her education at RPI to pursue her Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Biophysics in the Fall.

Larry Rhein, MD, MPH (He/Him)

Larry Rhein, MD, MPH, joined the faculty at UMass Chan Medical School in June 2016. He is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Chair of the Department of Pediatrics. Dr. Rhein is board-certified in both pediatric pulmonology and neonatology. He is a health services researcher with a focus on respiratory outcomes of neonatal lung disease and is a national expert on lung disease of prematurity. Dr. Rhein runs a research program focused on optimizing respiratory status in infants with severe lung diseases, particularly infants who are technology- or oxygen-dependent. He has pioneered several protocols for safe outpatient oxygen weaning, which allows infants to be discharged from the neonatal intensive care unit much earlier. Through clinical trials and analysis of physiological data, Dr. Rhein hopes to develop new strategies to prevent and treat neonatal and pediatric lung disease.

She is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Population Quantitative Health Sciences at UMass Chan Medical School. Dr. Trivedi is Principal Investigator on a National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded clinical trial of Asthma Link, a clinic-school partnership that delivers school-supervised asthma therapy to children with poorly controlled asthma in 52 schools across Massachusetts. 

 

With a focus on sustainable, pragmatic interventions, she has developed a novel methodology for stakeholder engagement, grounded in implementation science, that elicits input from children, parents, pediatricians, community and systems-level stakeholders (payors, legislators, and public health officials) in order to adapt evidence-based interventions to real-world settings. The ultimate goal of this methodology and her work is to develop interventions that produce positive public and population health impact, particularly for historically marginalized populations.

She also has a strong track record of building sustainable centers of excellence in safety-net healthcare systems. 

As a disability and chronic disease self-advocate, Ms. LeBlanc has spent years redefining what it means to promote inclusivity and belonging and is dedicated to continually raising the bar for herself and her colleagues. Ms. LeBlanc completed her undergraduate degree at Wesleyan University and completed her master’s in communications at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University.

He is the Founding Director of the Child Health Equity Center and the Founding Program Director of the Program to Advance Training in Child Health Equity (PATH) Fellowship. He is currently a Professor of Pediatrics and Vice Chair of Health Equity at UMass Chan Medical School and UMass Memorial Children’s Medical Center. Dr. Garg is also Associate Chief Quality Officer for Health Equity for UMass Memorial Health

Since 2009, Dr. Garg has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and has received extramural funding from private foundations. He is Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator on multiple NIH-funded awards focused on testing and/or evaluating the implementation of interventions addressing social needs. He has published over 80 peer-reviewed manuscripts and serves as Associate Editor for the Journal of Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics. He was recently the Chair of the Health Care Delivery Committee for the Academic Pediatric Association.
